I hope this letter finds you well and that you have been enjoying the summer. Perhaps you’ve been gardening, golfing, cottage-ing, visiting family and maybe sneaking in a little travel?
I've had some down time, but I have also been spending far more time in front of the computer than any artist should, busy working away on a variety of projects and contracts! I have some exciting things to share with you. Let's catch up shall we?

Featuring... "Crystal Grey"
As some of you know, the fine folks at Da Vinci Paint Co. have been working on my custom colour. The long awaited CRYSTAL GREY line should be out by mid fall. It will be a trio set that will include a warm, a cool and a neutral – great for making shadows and creating dramatic tones without the heaviness or opacity typically seen in other tube greys. I’m super jazzed ! It’s been a longtime coming (10 years in the making) and almost 2 years of anticipation since my first meeting with Marcello (owner of DVP) when he proposed the idea! I can’t wait!!! You won’t have to make your greys from scratch any more! Think of the time you’ll save!
International Artist Magazine
Last year, I was asked by International Artist Magazine to submit a step by step demo. I am deeply honoured to have this opportunity to reach such a wide audience. Touted as the worlds “best art magazine” it is distributed to over 65 countries around the world! I’ve thought long and hard about the painting I wanted to submit. Because it was so popular, and not all of you were able to participate in the workshop, I’ve chosen the peonies in the mason jar as my lesson. “Peonies for Dad” will be featured in an upcoming issue- as soon as I know exactly which one, I will make the announcement. Stay tuned!

You’ll see that while many are GREEK inspired themes, there is a large variety of subject matter and techniques to be covered. I tend to choose themes as a concrete way to illustrate techniques, but these lessons carry over universally and can be applied to most subjects. I think you’ll derive as much inspiration from the following classes as I did from my trip there.
I think that’s about it. Remember that classes are first come first serve and they are filling up FAST! There is a materials list available for download on the webpage, an EXACT address will be given to you a week before the start date of our session. Classes are located in the Meadowlands/Woodroffe area. Space is very limited- only 8 spots each, so there are no "holds" . REGISTER HERE
Spring is finally here and I have a few exciting announcements to make! So why don't you grab a cup of tea, turn on some soothing music and read all about it...
Newest Exhibition: "Darling Buds of May"...
Watercolours & New Oil Paintings now on display at
Mint Hair Studio (until the end of May)
1071 Wellington St. W. Ottawa - 613.695.3133
"Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate:
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
And summer's lease hath all too short a date,
Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,
And often is his gold complexion dimmed,
And every fair from fair sometime declines,
By chance, or nature's changing course, untrimmed.
But thy eternal summer shall not fade,
Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow'st,
Nor shall death brag thou wand'rest in his shade,
When in eternal lines to time thou grow'st.
So long as men can breathe or eyes can see,
So long lives this, and this gives life to thee."
~William Shakespear's 18th Sonnet

Proud to be Da Vinci Paints newest Ambassador
"Da Vinci paint has been my only paint for the last 15 years. Rich, vivid pigment that brushes out beautifully. The consistency is something I can count on from tube to tube and year-to-year. It's also perfect for squeezing into my travel palette when I teach workshops abroad.
I recommend it to all of my students. It's a top notch artist quality paint and with the large size tubes and price point, it's extremely - affordable even for those just starting out .

"Life On The Rock"
The Studio Cafe
1089 Somerset Street West, Ottawa
About this show
Watercolours & Oils of Newfoundland
“Life on The Rock” is the double entendre referring to both the nickname given to the province of Newfoundland but also the actual micro-universe that lives on a rock. A body of work created in homage to my journey to and experience in Newfoundland in September of 2013.
Its wild and rugged landscape has a unique ecosystem that varies extremely from region to region. With that comes an earthy palette so varied I near got whiplash straining to take in everything I could during my drive from St.John’s to the studio in Trinity, even in September. Treed, dense vegetation in one window and jagged outcrops of rocks painted with bright autumnal tundra. Of particular beauty is the Trepassey area (along the Irish Loop). Where once it supported one of the worlds largest roaming caribou herds, after a devastating parasite now it has diminished to only a few hundred, heart broken I knew immediately I wished to paint images to tell this story. I was also fascinated by the geology - from the grandiose scale of a single monolith to the tiniest pebbles, to the thinnest blood red shale. "
The piece entitled “The Weight of a Stone” (click for video) is from an image I took on a 4 hour hike through Butter Pot Provincial park. The rocks are Precambrian era and are approximately 600 million years old. After the last glacation, huge boulders were left behind that take on rather anthropomorphic shapes. In this case they look to me like a small family, a baby shielded by the presence of it’s parents. I like the idea of linking our human experience to the natural world.
