She moves easily between oil, watercolour and pencil choosing the medium based on the type of language she feels best expresses her subject matter. She often features a strong female lead in her artwork. Crystal's inspiration comes from her travels; to Mexico and Santa Fe and Mid-Western America and of course Canada, which she calls home.
"Growing up on a farm, studying, drawing and working closely with animals was and continues to be an endless source of inspiration. The curve of a neckline, the earned trust and knowing found in the eye of living creatures, the magical exchange between the human encounter and a wild or domestic beast; that feeling is what I am after. For me, the movement, accuracy of anatomy and texture of fur are important details in honouring the uniqueness of each animal. I enjoy the juxtaposition and contemporary play of expressive lines and splatter as background support to the subject matter in question. "
